Advocacy in Action: HAPI Strengthens Disability-Inclusive Development with Federal Ministry

Recently, Hope Alive for Possibilities Initiative (HAPI) took another decisive step in advancing disability-inclusive development in Nigeria through a strategic advocacy visit to the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development (FMHADMSD) in Abuja.

Led by HAPI’s Executive Director, the delegation was warmly received by key ministry officials, including Director Sunday Hezekiah, who welcomed the team on behalf of the Honourable Minister. The meeting created a vital platform to align priorities, share progress, and explore pathways for deeper collaboration.

Spotlighting Progress and Priority Issues

During the engagement, HAPI highlighted critical milestones and ongoing interventions, including:

  • The successful passage of the Benue State Disability Rights Bill is a major win for disability advocacy at the sub-national level

  • HAPI’s menstrual hygiene project for young girls with disabilities, supported by Fòs Feminista, addresses dignity, health, and inclusion

  • The urgent need for economic empowerment and entrepreneurship opportunities for women with disabilities

  • Strong calls for inclusive governance, employment opportunities, and accessibility reforms across sectors

These discussions reinforced the reality that disability inclusion must cut across humanitarian response, social protection, development planning, and economic empowerment.

A Willing Partner for Inclusion

The Ministry affirmed its willingness to partner with HAPI, recognise Organisations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs), and continue advocating for the full inclusion of persons with disabilities nationwide. This commitment marks a promising step toward coordinated action that translates policy commitments into lived realities.

From Advocacy to Impact

This advocacy visit was more than a meeting — it was a reaffirmation that inclusive development is possible when civil society and government work together. At HAPI, we remain committed to building partnerships that are sustainable, accountable, and people-centred.

We are grateful for the warm reception and optimistic about a partnership that truly leaves no one behind.
